[16 leaflets related to the cases of Jerrold Hall and John Henry Owens]
[San Francisco Bay Area]: Committee for Justice for Jerrold Hall and John Henry Owens, 1993. Sixteen items, most of them 8.5x11 inch handbills, two in other formats. Generally very good.
The Committee brought together a number of organizations that did not always get along, including the Spartacist League, Revolutionary Workers League, members of the Peace and Freedom Party, and Copwatch. Jerrold Hall and John Henry Owens had been pursued by BART police for stealing a radio on Nov. 15, 1992. Hall was shot and killed, the first fatality at the hands of BART police. These leaflets and brochures assail the BART Police Department as "one of hundreds of police units nationwide that gets away with racism and murder." Most are announcements of rallies, including one on the anniversary of the Rodney King beating. Many demand the release of Owens, and the arrest of the officer who shot Hall. This case was in some ways a prequel to the organizing that would happen after the shooting of Oscar Grant in 2009.
