Burdett had written a public letter to his constituents in 1819 censuring the government for leading a cavalry charge against thousands of peaceful pro-democracy demonstrators at the Peterloo Massacre in Manchester. This record of his trial was published by the noted radical printer William Hone. Charged with seditious libel, Burdett was found guilty and sentenced to three months' imprisonment plus a large fine.
