Das Juden Badstub [broadside]

[Stuttgart]: [J. Scheible], [1847]. 7.75x12.25 inch broadside with 19 panels depicting an anti-Semitic story in pictures. Originally a fold-out in "Das Schaltjahr," a calendar published by Johann Scheible in 1847, this example has been removed from the book. Neatly fold-creased, a couple of thin spots at top from glue removal.

One of many versions of this strip, "The Jewish Bathhouse." Panels 1-16 depict Jewish moneylenders (identifiable by circular ribbons on their cloaks) tricking a wealthy German into coming to their bathhouse, where with the aid of devils they make him blind, subsequently robbing him. The moneylenders end up in hell. The last three panels cite other anti-Semitic motifs, including the accusation that Jews had murdered a Christian child in Trent in 1476.
