"Each year the Asian Pacific Student Union launches a campaign throughout the West Coast. The campaign singles out one issue which can give the West Coast body a common area of work and a coordinated thrust. The West Coast APSU Coordinating Committee proposes that the 1979-80 West Coast campaign be a concerted, coordinated effort of educational work and fundraising to help free Chol Soo Lee..."
Lee, who came to the US as a child and suffered from severe culture shock as well as mental illness, found himself in frequent trouble with the law. He was convicted of the 1973 murder of SF gang leader Yip Yee Tak. While in prison, he killed another inmate in self-defense. Lee's supporters believed he had been wrongfully convicted, and a pair of articles in the Sacramento Union brought public attention to the catastrophic flaws in Lee's trial.
