Published by the rabble-rouser Julius Streicher, whose portrait at the end of the book proclaims “He who fights the Jews battles the Devil.” The title, which means "The Toadstool," refers to the claim that “Just as it is often hard to tell a toadstool from an edible mushroom, so too it is often very hard to recognize the Jew as a swindler and criminal.” Themes of other illustrations include “Just look at these guys! The louse-infested beards! The filthy, protruding ears,” “Here, kids, I have some candy for you. But you both have to come with me," “Splendid, Colleague Silberstein. We took the lovely money from the two Goy women and can put it in our own pockets,” and many more along similar lines. For Julius Streicher's role in fomenting violent hatred through his publishing company, he was charged with inciting genocide by the Nuremberg Tribunal after the war and sentenced to death.
