Hardcover. 178p., first American edition cloth boards in dj, pages evenly browned, previous owner's rubberstamp on title page, else very good condition in an unclipped dj; inscribed and signed by Vilallonga (as "Jose") to the director Fred Zinnemann; Vilallonga appeared in Zinnemann's 1964 film "Behold a Pale Horse."

The novelist, initially a Franco supporter, gradually became disenchanted with the postwar regime and went into opposition; at writing Spain had sentenced him in absentia to long-term imprisonment. This novel was awarded 1959's Prix Rivarol by jurists Francois Mauriac, Jules Romains, Henri Troyat and Gabriel Marcel.
