Bruce St. John Maher's International Driving Permit
Wellesley, MA: US International Motor Traffic, [1987]. 4x6 inches, folded and staplebound, folds out in three panels with identification flap listing birth date, place of issue, and photo stapled to the flap; minor smudging and wear, otherwise in very good condition.
Born in St. Louis, Bruce St. John Maher was a gay artist and activist. In his adolescence, he was subjected to gay conversion treatments, leaving his lungs permanently damaged (he would eventually die of lung cancer in 2023). At age 13, Maher escaped his home to San Francisco, where he eventually befriended Allen Ginsberg, Ram Dass, Wavy Gravy, and Harvey Milk, whose campaign he helped work on. A champion for rural gays, in the '80s Maher moved to Mendocino County with friends and a lover, Victor Galloti. Together they formed a gay collective near Laytonville, at Rattlesnack Creek; it lasted for about eight years. He also became a master glass blower, with pieces exhibited from the NY Metropolitan to the Smithsonian and even the Louvre. This international driver's license is from the Rattlesnack Creek chapter of Maher's life.
