The Communist Campanile [47 issues]

Berkeley, CA: Young Communist League; Communist Party, 1937-1949. Forty-seven issues of the Communist newsletter for the UC Berkeley area, in three separate series sharing the same title. The earliest is an eight-page staplebound booklet, 8.5x11 inches, with a striking cover illustration, dated March 1937. This issue was published by the Lincoln Steffens branch of the Young Communist League. The next series begins again with volume 1 in 1941, and most issues are single 8.5x11 or 8.5x14 inch sheets mimeographed on both sides, with a few issues comprising two sheets. These are published by both the YCL branch and the local Party branch, thus involving the non-student population as well. Many of these are on brittle paper susceptible to edge chipping. We have two examples of vol. 1 no. 19, each missing various chips but serving together to preserve the entire issue, as well as no. 2 (chipped), 4, 5, 11, 16 (crinkled), 17-20, 22; vol. 2 nos. 1, 2, 3 (chipped), 6, "3" (but dated later, April 1943); vol. 3 nos. 1-6, two issues numbered 7, and 8. Lastly, we have a post-war series, issued by the Merriman and Haldane Clubs of the Party at UC Berkeley. These are all 8.5x11 inches, generally mimeographed on better paper, beginning in 1946. The issues present are vol. 1 nos. 2, 3, 5, 6, 8; vol. 2 nos. 1-3, 5, 6, 8; vol. 4 nos. 2, 3; vol. 5 nos. 1-3, and vol. 6 nos. 1 and 2.

This span of issues offers a broad survey of the changing issues addressed by local activists, from anti-fascism and support for the Republic in the Spanish Civil War in the 1937 issue, to 1949's concerns about faculty losing jobs because of anti-communist investigations.
