Legalize Spiritual Discovery [pinback button]

A Sept. 20, 1966 NY Times report describes Timothy Leary as wearing a pink pin with this slogan at a press conference announcing the establishment of the League of Spiritual Discovery. Because UUU was not established until 1967, this must be based on that earlier design. Randy Wicker, a member of the Mattachine Society, appears to have made his start in the world of pins by selling “Equality for Homosexuals” buttons. In 1967, he opened Underground Uplift Unlimited at 28 St. Marks Place, which sold a broad range of pins, including anti-war, counterculture and drug themed, as well as many silly or humorous slogans. His pins, including this one, have the initials UUU and the address over the curl.
