First published in France in 1971 by the socialist publisher François Maspero, the book details torture techniques and military violence used by Brazilian authorities. This is the first Spanish language edition. The book was banned in Brazil and did not see a Brazilian edition until 2013. The "pau de arara" technique ties a victim's arms and legs tightly around a pole and was used to discipline Brazilian slaves, in Nazi concentration camps, and, more recently, has been endorsed by Jair Bolsonaro.
