A big Victory! [handbill]

The Workers Alliance of America, a Popular Front-era collaboration between the Socialist Party, the Communist Party, and others, pressed for better WPA funding, and at this time was demanding the creation of 25,000 WPA jobs in Buffalo. This bill highlights success at winning support for an unemployed mother. The 5th Ward in Buffalo was the heart of the segregated African American community, and although this leaflet makes no reference to any ethnic group, census records show that the Mrs. Faust cited on the leaflet was Black. “Yesterday: Mrs. Faust of 61 Union St. brought her case to the Workers Alliance Branch of the Fifth Ward. Mrs. Faust and her two little babies had been denied any relief for the past two-and-a-half weeks. The Workers Alliance immediately issued a leaflet to the people of the 5th Ward. We called upon the people to protest this act of discrimination. Our grievance committee spun into action, determined to win. Today: Just 24 hours after Mrs. Faust turned over her grievance to the Workers Alliance, the Welfare Department had to bring her grocery order. Mrs. Faust and her 2 babies will not go hungry anymore, thanks to the fighting spirit of the 5th Ward branch of the Workers Alliance.”.
