King Nebuchanezzar ate grass! Unemployed next, says relief officials! [handbill]

Buffalo, NY: Workers Alliance of America, [1936]. 8.5x11 inch mimeographed handbill, some toning, "Buffalo, 1936" penned at lower right, otherwise very good.

The Workers Alliance of America, a Popular Front-era collaboration between the Socialist Party, the Communist Party, and others, pressed for better WPA funding and welfare benefits for the unemployed. This leaflet targets the residents of the Riverside neighborhood of Buffalo. "Everybody remembers the story in the Bible about King Nebuchanezzar of Babylon who roamed the fields,eating grass. Nebuchanezzar was crazy... The relief officials must think the unemployed of Riverside are a bunch of crazy Nebuchanezzars! They have given the unemployed a printed bulletin about all sorts of wild grass & herbs which can be eaten this summer. (Here's one of weeds recommended. They admit it is poisonous, yet they want us and our children to risk our lives for a few pennies!) This proves that the Relief Officials are determined to cut out relief and starve us! Dollars mean more to them than human lives! Thousands are being laid off WPA! No more relief for single men! How can we defeat this????" The accompanying graphic illustrates Pokeweed or Scoke, only the young shoots of which are edible. The leaflet urges the reader to join the Workers Alliance of America., and announces an open-air meeting at Hutter and Tonawanda.
