Chiefly a salvo against Tammany Hall, the Democratic political machine in the city, with numerous allegations of corruption and collusion in the police, health, building, and tax assessment departments. The chief complaints revolve around Tammany boss Richard Croker’s view that all sitting judges ought to be friendly to Tammany Hall and the exorbitant tax rates some were made to pay.
