Public health guide presented in a heavily-illustrated, easy-to-read format. Reports on a project in western Mexico to provide, in a communal setting, low-cost solutions for children who are born with or develop physical disabilities in rural areas. Several of these solutions draw from the concept of “appropriate technology,” adapting tools for local use. For example, there are illustrated guides to creating casts and building wheelchairs that are better suited to navigating uneven terrain. There are also examples of local materials (rocks, wood) to assist in physical therapy exercises. Includes two fotonovela-like sequences documenting teatro campesino performances, a table of known disabilities (polio, rheumatic fever, epilepsy, amputations, and many others), a brief section on the overuse of vaccinations, and much other health information. Hesperian Foundation was founded in 1973 by David Werner, the author of “Where There Is No Doctor,” a popular healthcare handbook.
