Casement's report of atrocities in the Congo Free State, originally published in 1904 when Casement was a British diplomat, was instrumental in forcing the Belgian parliament to take over the colony from King Leopold. Casement went on to become a prominent Irish independence advocate, charged with treason during WWI for working with Germany to solicit support for the Easter Rising. He was executed after a trial that brought forward allegations of homosexuality.
