n.p. [Communist Party, USA], 1956-1957. Fourteen packets and handbills, 8.5x11 or 8.5x14 inches, mimeographed sheets stapled at corner, pages toned and sometimes edgeworn. Most have a penciled note at the top stating that they were duplicate copies.

Coming after Khrushchev's revelations about Stalin, the 1957 convention was a momentous one for the CPUSA. The documents included here are the following: "Notes and proposals for the coming convention of the Communist Party. Submitted by: A Group of Communist Intellectuals" (16 pages), along with a different version dated January 4, 1957 and specifying that the intellectuals were from California (9 pages); a three-page open letter by Fred M. Fine warning against dogmatism; "Material on Daily Worker and Sunday Worker" (5 p.); "The Party crisis and the way out" by William Z. Foster (17p.); "Draft resolution on farm problems" (2 p.); a draft resolution on Latin America (2 pages); a draft resolution on Cuba (one page), along with a revised version (one page); a resolution on cultural work (one page); a resolution on Latin America (one page); a three-page critique by William Weinstone of Joseph Starobin's "Views on the perspectives of the new period"; a two-page message to all staff and district committees from the National Office with updates on actions taken after the convention, and a three-page collection of responses by outside observers who were invited to attend the convention in an effort to convey openness and reform.
