Memorandum on Luiz Carlos Prestes

New York: Council for Pan American Democracy, [1940]. Ephemera. 3 leaves, printed rectos only, stapled at upper left corner. 8.5x11 inches. Very Good.

Biographical sketch of Prestes, who was secretary general of the Brazilian Communist Party. Text emphasizes his leadership and efforts to secure an eight-hour workday, land reform, equal pay regardless of gender and/or race, pensions, unemployment insurance, expulsion of fascists from government, among other reforms. Much of the text focuses on his leadership role in the National Liberation Alliance and the failed 1935 communist uprisings in Natal, Recife, and Rio de Janeiro which led to Prestes’s imprisonment (he was convicted in 1940 and pardoned in 1945). The article closes by denouncing amnesty granted to fascists by the Vargas government and calls for amnesty for Brazilian political prisoners.
