Nichols, along with his wife Mary Gove Nichols advocated Fourierism, Grahamism and free love in his early years and this work contains sections on social reform. He and Mary were both hydrotherapists and jointly founded the communal Memnonia Institute at Yellow Springs, Ohio. Nichols converted to Catholicism in 1857 and went into self-imposed exile in England in 1861. A major travel account of America.
