Coard had been arrested on charges of ordering the assassination of Grenadian leader Maurice Bishop. "Greetings to this International Solidarity Conference from myself and all the Comrades behind bars. The staging of this Conference at this time marks an extremely important development in our struggle for justice and freedom... As I write US Warships and military forces are once more in Grenada's territorial waters, and on our soil, engaged in military exercises. To Grenadians it is a well known secret that these forces which will be here for a period of ninety (90) days, are on hand to coincide with the hearing of our Appeal. This development is a replay of what took place both at the Preliminary Inquiry and the 'Trial'... All these developments simply underscore what is already well-known: that the present Government in Grenada is a puppet Regime, put together and installed by the Reagan Administration and the CIA.. And that the US Administration are the true masters of Grenada at present."
