Eldridge at the time was best known for his fantasy trilogy "My First Two Thousand Years: the Autobiography of the Wandering Jew", "Salome: the Wandering Jewess" and "The Invincible Adam" co-written with Nazi agent George Sylvester Viereck. He was also published by Haldeman-Julius. This novel is a comedy about an actor in the south of France performing as Othello.
