Dawson was the son of the South Carolina newspaper editor born Austin John Reeks in Britain who joined the Confederacy and was murdered by his neighbor in a notorious incident in 1889. His son who wrote under the name Warrington Dawson was a flamboyant exile in France and correspondent with Joseph Conrad who promoted this book (under the original title of "Grand Elixir") which is a fantasy and parody about mystical perfumes.
