Sandberg was 18 years old when Hungary was occupied by the German army. His parents were both taken to concentration camps and killed. He was mobilized into the Labour Service of the Hungarian army before being taken to Dachau. After the liberation of the camps, he returned to Hungary and then immigrated to Palestine, where he fought in the IDF.
