"No employer shall coerce or influence or attempt to coerce or influence his employees through or by means of threat of discharge or loss of employment to adopt or follow or refrain from adopting or following any particular course or line of political action or political activity. " California State labor code, chapter 5; section 1102 [handbill]
[San Francisco]: Met Life Employees' Peace Committee, n.d. 8.5x11 inch handbill, fold-creased; text on both sides.
On the case of an employee disciplined for anti-Vietnam War activism. "On May 26, John Lincoln, an employee in the College Trainee program at Metropolitan, was fired from his position with the Company. The immediate stated reason for termination was 'insubordination,' a charge arising from an incident in which a leaflet advertising a forthcoming poetry reading was placed on the bulletin board in the entrance to the cafeteria on the California Street side of the building. The real reason involves much more complex and far reaching implications, for what has actually occurred is a denial by Management, of an employee's legally protected right to express his personal opinions and convictions, as guaranteed under the Constitution and reiterated in the California State Labor Code, in regard to political questions which directly affect each one of us... We of the Met Life Employee's Peace Committee have expressed in the plainest of plain talk our desire to work for constructive change by working strictly within the legal framework of the society and the Company. Our words have been conscientiously and meticulously chosen to avoid the possibility of misunderstanding, and to express our belief that only through creative and nonviolent applications of our power as people in this land created Of, By, and For the People can we hope to change the destructive course our Nation is now being forced to follow. And yet, we have been accused of advocating violent revolution, of calling for disruptive rallies and demonstrations, of resorting to means 'peaceful or otherwise' to achieve our goals..."
