The Sun and Sand Magazine [two issues]

Fresno, CA: Sierra Freshman School, 1981, 1983. Magazine. Two issues of the staplebound 8.5x11 inch compendium, Spring 1981 and Spring 1983, 77 and 132 pages respectively, very good.

An annual magazine compiled from interviews that students conducted with elders, accompanied by selected recipes. Includes many interviews with elderly immigrants and former agricultural workers. The preface by Mary Ann Verdugo in the 1981 issue states, "The contents of this magazine were collected and put together almost entirely by ninth graders. My students have spent many, many after-and-in school hours patiently listening to interviews on tape, then transcribing what they heard--bits of wisdom, articulate expressions, vivid descriptions and humorous recollections about what life was like during the turn of this century.... While attending a California-Teachers-of-English conference in San Francisco, I heard about Eliot Wigginton and the Foxfire cultural journal, a student magazine that was started in Rabun Gap, Georgia. I was intrigued with the idea; why not attempt such a project in the San Joaquin Valley? After all, no Valley in America can boast of so many diverse groups of people.... For the first time, my students really--really became acquainted with their grandparents. They listened in awe to stories about deprivations, self-sacrifices, unbending love and loyalties among parents, children, uncles and aunts. They ventured deeper into the community and listened to other people's grandparents and some citizens of different ethnic groups recollect stories about their youth. They listened with astonishment as they heard what life was like before television and automobile or airplane travel."
