The Kaweah Commonwealth, a journal for those who labor and who think. Vol. 2 no. 28, New Series (May 30, 1891)

Kaweah, CA: Kaweah Publishing Company, 1891. Newspaper. Four-page newspaper, horizontal fold crease, a couple of short closed edge tears. The paper is not too acidic, hence little in the way of chipping or other deterioration.

Published by the secular Marxist commune established in what's now Sequoia National Park by activists who left San Francisco. In this humble cataloger's mind they are best known for naming the largest tree in America the Karl Marx tree - now known as the General Sherman tree. This issue was published amid the rising tide of conflict with covetous lumber companies as well as government agencies seeking to preserve the forest. Cover story is reprinted from the Tulare County Times: "Kaweah Colonists: their threatened eviction arouses indignation. Will a Democratic Congress see that justice is done?"
