Hardcover. xx, 451, 456p., no illustrations whatsoever, as issued; two volumes, curtom-bound in 8x5 inch marbled boards with good calf backstrips lettered and ruled gilt, all edges decoratively sprinkled in dark blue (color very faded), well-tanned calfskin tinted medium brown, the leather mildly rubbed but not abraded, boards edgeworn else quite sound (no turned corners, &c), relatively new endsheets from the recasing period (circa 1900) that complement the old paperstock. Vol I suffered a serious pipe-coal burn that consumed semi-circles of margin to ten or so terminal leaves, and stained forty adjacent pages; no text was affected but the burn came close to a couple of index entries. All in all, a good set, signed by Swediaur in Vol I; very presentable on the shelf and easy to handle.
Signed as a token of good faith for Swediaur's reading public, and as an acknowledgment to the authorities that overstepping his candor of expression could land him in a revolutionary pokey (the Bastille?).
