Sugimoto was born in Japan in 1874, and attended a Methodist School in Tokyo. In 1898, she was married to a Japanese merchant living in Cincinnati. Following his death, she returned to Japan briefly and then settled in New York City where she taught at Columbia University. She passed away in 1950. This novel is about a Japanese grandmother whose son has gone off to fight in the Sino-Japanese war.
