Washington, D.C. All Souls' Church, 1946-1951. Staplebound. various pagination, 3.5x6 inches; throughout - toning, some staples slightly rusted, minor edge-wear, else in very good condition. Outliers: issue from May 1948 is foxing, repaired with non-archival tape, and the back cover is detached, New Years program back cover detached, minor water damage on November 1949 sermon, and two tiny green pen marks on the front wraps of the February 1951 sermon. Lot includes: 1946, one sermon; 1947, four sermons; 1948, one sermon; 1949, eight sermons which includes a reprint of a 1946 sermon titled, "Religion, Common Sense and the Race Question", also includes, "What is an Un-American?" (1949) and "Is Socialism More Ethical Than Capitalism?" (1949); 1950, eight sermons + News Years program; and 1951, four sermons.

While a reverend of the All Souls' Church in Washington, D.C., Arthur Powell Davies was also an advocate of civil rights through his sermons. Although not a communist himself, he was particularly outspoken against the Red Scare led by HUAC and spoke on other controversial topics. Eventually, he wrote a book in 1953 named after his 1950 sermon (included here) called "The Urge to Persecute."
