Produced by Visual Communications, a Los Angeles-based non-profit, Hito Hata became the first feature length film made by Asian Americans for Asian Americans. The plot centered around an Issei man fighting eviction in Los Angeles' Little Tokyo, and starred such figures as Mako, Pat Morita, and Hiroshi Kashiwagi. Yuji Ichioka, the founder of the Asian American Political Alliance, was a consultant on the script. His co-founder and wife, Emma Gee, was an extra in one of the scenes. The national Public Broadcasting service rejected the film for a nationwide airing, but it was shown on local PBS stations as well as NHK in Japan.
