Miller was born in South Carolina but settled in the Bay Area where he went on to help launch the Aldridge Players West, a Black drama group based in San Francisco. A long-time professor at Laney College, Miller also started Mina Press, and worked with Robert Hass to create the Addison Street Poetry Walk in Berkeley.
