The Italian-born Bresci had established himself as a weaver in Paterson, New Jersey in the 1890s, where he was involved in the Italian anarchist community. He traveled back to Italy to kill the king, after which he was sentenced to penal servitude, the death penalty having been abolished. His 1901 hanging was declared a suicide, though many supporters believed he had been murdered.
