Oracle of Southern California: vol. 1, no. 8, December, 1967

Los Angeles: Oracle Cosmic Joy Fellowship, 1967. 32p., 11.25x15 inch tabloid newspaper, never folded, but the lower right corner of page 9 creased and torn as it got folded, possibly in the printing process; no missing text. Several other pages have short closed edge tears.

An eclectic issue of the L.A. counterpart to the more spiritual Oracle published in San Francisco. This reeks of hip exploitation, though is instructive for all that. Touts two black-lite posters, one a two-page spread with an intricate mandala of six red buddhas on a yellow field with additional filigree around; the other a split-fount centerspread of drawings of the Beatles, the Maharishi, Jefferson Airplane, Peter, Paul & Mary, Donovan, Jimi Hendrix, et al. Includes: article on "Tuning In with Children"; a Sioux Honoring Song; a two-page spread of many short poems, including one by Bob Kaufman; a 2-page discourse on the Ankh with some impressive intricate color art; short interviews with five "New Gurus", the longest with Art Kleps, Chief Boo-Hoo of the Neo-American Church; and lengthy instructions on how to get high by meditating on the black-lite mandala. Back cover tops things off with a colored day-glo high-contrast photo of a nude woman, natch.
