Freiburg: Herder, 1899. Hardcover. An especially nice exemplar of the first edition in its original dust jacket: xiii, 531p., plates as called for including color frontis and (bound in at back) a folded world map in colors. Bound in also are perhaps a dozen sepia terraine maps with added spot-colors. Hardbound in grass-green cloth boards glitteringly decorated in gilt and more color. Cloth hinges, always a good sign, coated alkaline paperstock throughout, textblock edges are tinted and also marbled (curious), photographic plates all tissue-guarded.. the one glitch we see is a fractionally-started leaf midway of textblock (maybe 1/64th of an inch), an else fine production in unmolested shape, enclosed in the as-issued dust jacket made of semi-coated kraft stock (trimmed as issued and spine-titled black). Dj is edgeworn with short tears at the head-rim and corner-tips. Wonderful copy.
