Johnson was a Socialist Workers Party organizer in the Twin Cities area, born in Chicago he grew up in Wisconsin. He went to Canada and worked for a number of years there, came back to face draft-dodging charges and after serving time on those charges was declared a non-citizen by the INS ordered to self-deport.
