Let the Rock Speak! Support freedom of speech [together with] Zippie: Vote Rock in 72 [two handbills]
Chicago: Zeitgeist Internationalist Party (Zippies), 1972. Handbill. Two 8.5x11 inch flyers, the first one in very good condition, the second with several inkly fingerprints at the bottom.
The Zippies were a faction of the Yippies who split off, in part after a dispute between Tom Forcade and Abbie Hoffman over money and authorship issues related to "Steal This Book!" There were also philosophical differences between the Hoffman-Rubin wing who were encouraging American youths in 1972 to vote for McGovern for president and the Forcade-associated Zippies who wished to run their own prank candidate (as the Yippies had done in 1968 by running Pigasus for president.) The first flyer here advertises a demonstration to be held at the Chicago ABC Network offices on Feb. 22, 1972 to protest ABC's refusal to "give our candidate equal time." The second flyer goes into detail about the rock's plan to switch parties, seeking nomination at both the Democratic and Republican conventions.
