Beyond O. J.; race, sex and class lessons for America

Los Angeles: Middle Passage Press, 1996. 208p., boards in glossy dj, very good copy.

See pp.95/6 for analysis of the doctoring of O. J.'s picture for the cover of Time magazine. "Time, after many protests from blacks, admitted that it doctored O.J.'s cover photo to make him look more sinister; managing editor James Gains at first blamed the distorted photo on a freelance artist." Gains later defended the alteration by "insist[ing] that it was an editorial decision that newspapers and magazines make all the time. They routinely crop, touch-up, and retouch." FYI, such photoshopping must be acknowledged in print.
