"Ellen Brewster, daughter of a shoe-factory worker, grows up among poverty and ignorance but manages to graduate from high-school. Despite an offer of help from rich Cynthia Lenox, Ellen goes to work in the shoe factory and becomes active in the strike which breaks out when wages are cut ten percent. As the strike drags on, Ellen realizes she was wrong and returns to work, defying the desperate strikers. The strike is lost and Ellen eventually marries Robert Lloyd, the nephew of the factory owner." *Blake p. 225.
