Stephen Long's Great American Desert. Reprinted from Proceedings of the American Philosophical Society, Vol. 111, No. 2, April, 1967

Philadelphia: American Philosophical Society, 1967. Pamphlet. Offprint, pp.93-108, the Dillon article solely-- three companion essays are left out of this reproduction of v.111 n.2., none of the three supplementary to Dillon. That said, a very nice copy: softbound in 10.5x8 inch plain printed grey wraps, presswork on glazed alkaline paperstock; illustrated with a number of b&w period vignettes and a fullpage line map. The corner-tips of our offering are lightly turned, else fine.

American explorers in the first half of the nineteenth century mistook fertile prairie land for inhospitable "desert", and other similar notions that created an apprehension that the way west of the Mississippi River was blocked by impassable terrain. Mr Stephen Long was a perpetuator of this error.
