Paris aux courses album par Cham
Paris: Maison Martinet, [ca. 1850-1869?]. Paperback. [16] ll., illustrations, wraps. 10 x 7.25 in. Pages spotted. Printed rectos only. Colophon: “Imp. Simon Raçon et Comp., rue d’Erfurtii, 1.”.
Book of lithographic plates, all caricatures satirizing horse racing and gambling. The title is a pun on “Paris,” the city, and “pari,” a bet. Thus, the title can be read as both “betting at the races” and “Paris at the races.” The rear cover advertises other “comiques” of Cham, which include satires on the Great Exhibition of London, French civil law, and museums.
