A eulogy to the French military commander Athanase-Charles-Marie Charette de la Contrie. A royalist and Roman Catholic, Charette was a captain in the Papal Zouves, a volunteer regiment organized in the 1860s for the defense of the Papal States during the Italian Wars of Unification. Charette later led a similar unit during the Franco-Prussian War known as the Volunteers of the West, in which the author of this work was a member.
