[Apologetic confession written in blood]

[Japan]: 1947. Letter. 14.25x10 inch sheet of paper, fold-creased with minor edge chips, with apologetic message written in blood by a 17-year-old Japanese student who had been found to possess an illegal pistol during the American occupation of Japan. Two sheets of legal documentation are included, spelling out the nature of the case and translating the message: "'Parents think more of their child, than the child, his parents.’ I was to blame for it all. I will be careful in the future so please let me stay at home.” In Japan, as in some other societies, using one's blood to write such a message was intended to convey the sincerity of remorse - in this case, for causing trouble to Tanaka's parents through his conduct.
