Fourteen Men. Story of the Australian Antarctic Expedition to Heard Island.

Melbourne: F.W. Cheshire, 1949. Hardcover. 273p., illustrated with b&w photography from the expedition, first edition hardbound pale grey cloth boards lettered in dark grey, and enclosed in the dust jacket. Endsheet map is a doublespread that shows the huge distances from Heard northwards to the Aussie mainland and southwards, to Australia's "Arctic Territory". Nobody died but it was occasionally in doubt. The expedition was launched at about the time that seal-hunters, working secretly, had nearly exterminated Antarctic mammalia. Book is near-fine (sound, clean, unmarked) with a touch of edgewear, while the dust jacket is edgeworn with some tiny folded tears and a minute perforation to a joint-line. Very good copy.
