Roosevelt; A Study in Ambivalence

New York: Jackson Press, 1919. Hardcover. xix, 159p. hardcover, endpapers toned, mild shelfwear, otherwise very good. Inscribed by Viereck to Konrad Nies, the foremost German American poet of the previous generation (Viereck himself having often been lauded as the foremost German-American poet of the subsequent generation).

Viereck, a noted poet who had become infamous as a pro-German propagandist in WWI, here discusses how Teddy Roosevelt, with whom he had had a friendly relationship up to the early stages of WWI, had become a fierce detractor. He uses the concepts of Freudian analysis to characterize the former president. Viereck went on to serve a prison term in WWII for his actions as a Nazi agent. Renewed attention has been drawn to him by Rachel Maddow in her 2022 podcast "Ultra," about pro-Nazi propagandists in the period leading up to WWII; she discusses how several US Congressmen worked with Viereck to disseminate Nazi propaganda through isolationist channels.
