The Terrible Necessity: A Book with a Challenge

Hawthorne, NJ: the author, n.d. Pamphlet. 46p. staplebound booklet, vertical crease; pages evenly toned, a fingerprint smudge on the front cover.

A discussion of the challenges facing the disabled, including the lack of paid labor as opposed to charity. "Some are pained because of my criticisms. If I withhold them I fail to deliver my message. The good will take care of itself, the evil must be pointed out and remedied. The people whom I censure need somebody to tell them about their faults; they accept criticisms from the press and the clergy and pay for it; so why be offended if I tell a few truths that are not sugar coated? The man or woman who loses interest in a cause because their weakness is pointed out need adversity to make them sympathetic and if I write to please one class I offend another; one can be over polite and say nothing. In fact, I am mild in my censure of the stupidity of the public, that allows its Government to be so callous in regard to handicapped people and, am hoping that my book will be an opening wedge that will be followed by heavier blows to split open the hard wood of conservatism." The booklet is dedicated to "the great army of cripples, the deaf, dumb and blind; the aged, the poor foreigner, the negroes and all who need a helping hand, a friendly word or a smile by the wayside."
