Frankfort o.M. Literarische Anstalt, Rütten & Loening, 1902. Pamphlet. 44p., 4 unnumbered leaves of plates, wraps with minor chipping, old vertical fold, presentation inscription in blue wax pencil on front cover else good condition.

An essay on Johann Dannecker’s marble statue “Ariadne on the Panther,” considered the sculptor’s most important work. Includes two poems by Friedrich Rueckert, never before published, and printed here presumably for the first time in English, written on the occasion of the statue’s removal from Stuttgart to Frankfurt in 1916. The sculpture was purchased by a banker, Simon Moritz von Bethmann (1786-1826), who built a museum in Frankfurt later named Ariadneum. Bethmann also funded schools, a library, and supported rights for Jewish people. Printed by August Osterrieth, responsible for the four photogravures that illustrate the pamphlet. Translated into English from the German by Frances Cahn. Presentation inscription on front cover: “To D. Gilden[?] Frankfurt Main June 1910.”.
