Against the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate, arguing that he is an extremist. Metcalf, then a state senator, lost the election but continued to run for various national offices until he was eventually elected to the House of Representatives in 1994. He was a sponsor of the 1963 Liberty Amendment, which would have abolished the federal income tax, the state tax, and the gift tax and liquidated all government enterprises not specifically mentioned in the Constitution.
