The New Party was organized in 1992 as a vehicle for progressive Democrats to poise as independent while endorsing Democrats but remaining a 3rd party. Founded in part by former supporters of Jesse Jackson's Rainbow Coalition, it dissolved in 1998 and some of it's leaders went on that year to form the Working Families Party, which played the same role as the New Party but with a stronger labor orientation.
