Two Documents from the Seattle Public Hearing of the Commission on Wartime Relocation and Internment of Civilians

1981. Staplebound. Documents include three-page stapled testimony prepared by the American Civil Liberties Union of Washington and three-page stapled agenda from the Commission on Wartime Relocation and Internment of Civilians (CWRIC) Public Hearing held in Seattle. The ACLU's testimony was presented by Dr. Alex Gottfried, a University of Washington Political Science Professor and anti-war activist. On the third page, there are notes on the proposed amount for redress payments to survivors. The first page of the CWRIC document is marked up with notes and observations on those testifying.

Between July and December of 1981, the Commission on Wartime Relocation and Internment of Civilians held eleven hearings to examine the reasoning behind Executive Order 9066 and how it impacted the Japanese American and Aleutian communities with the goal of providing recommendations on the issue of redress. Following the release of the report Personal Justice Denied, along with activism by the Japanese American community, the Civil Liberties Act of 1988 was passed.
