Freeman was raised in Washington, D.C. by two parents who had been workers in an Indian Refugee camp. He was active in the anti-war movement with his family, and edited a poetry journal. He joined the Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL) in 2005 while organizing against the Iraq War with the ANSWER Coalition. In 2020, he was the running mate on the PSL ticket, with Gloria La Riva.
