Hardcover. v, 255p., illustrated with two portraits and a wood-engraved elevation of first fort (this view decorates titlepage), hardbound in 9.5x6 inch brown cloth boards with a pressed design, gilt-lettered. Casing is sound and square but shabby; pastedown has a seller's penciling and a tiny label; the interior slightly marred with two areas where a green underline or bracket accompanies a marginal area dotted with pin-holes (pp.5, 239). The sewn textblock shows a couple narrow gaps but appears to be holding well. A better-than reading copy, in its peculiar original binding.
